Nanomaterials

Regulation

Cefic is of the opinion that existing and the upcoming REACH legislation in European countries offer a sufficient framework for the evaluation of “new” and “existing” nanomaterials.

However, if the weight of evidence of on-going scientific findings indicates the necessity of modifications, the European chemical industry is prepared to constructively cooperate with politicians, authority bodies, and relevant stakeholders to develop the framework conditions favourable to rapid risk analysis and sustainable utilization of nanotechnologies.

Cefic supports efforts to review existing test guidelines to determine if they are adequate to address manufactured nanomaterials. Therefore the European chemical industry will contribute to the identification of those test guidelines which need to be revised and updated to address manufactured nanomaterials. It is also possible that the need for new test guidelines will be identified.

To ensure the safety of products regardless of their source, the industry calls for a global approach to the management of risks presented by nanomaterials, led by the OECD.
