Dialogue with the public

Nanotechnologies represent an enormous opportunity, but they are also a serious challenge: how do we ensure that in finding solutions we don’t create new problems? Such questions deserve a broad and open debate with society.

Politicians, regulators, scientists and industry have the responsibility to cooperate to address societal concerns and foster an environment of open, honest, and respectful debate.

Transparent reporting about use, exposure, safety and benefits of nanotechnology, disclosure of new findings to the authorities and the public, as well as a proactive engagement with stakeholders are part of the European chemical industry commitment and contribution to the current debate on nanotechnologies.

Stakeholder Engagement Workshop

Cefic held on 24 June in Brussels its first Europe-wide event on nanotechnology. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss how to foster the responsible development of sustainable innovations based on nanotechnologies and how to achieve greater transparency and engagement with civil society.

This goal is also included in the agenda of the European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem) in which Cefic is one of the main drivers. SusChem is working to build a supportive environment in Europe for innovation and research in partnership with society.

Through its educational programmes, Cefic is helping schoolchildren and students to understand scientific principles and the importance of technology in today's society.
